WHO AM I?
My name is Tina Abigail Marcia Matsimella. Why do I have so many names you wonder? Well, my first one was given to me by my mother, Joycelyn Matsimella. She took it from a minister’s wife whose name was Albertina. Abigail was given to me by my oldest brother, Andre, and Marcia by my second oldest brother, Geoffrey. I’m not Zulu even though my surname is. My great-great-great grandfather was Zulu and that’s how I got a Zulu surname.
I am 15 years of age and currently doing Grade 10. I attend Livingstone High school which is not far from where I live. I was born on the 26th of June 1987 in Kingsbury Hospital, Cape Town. I share this date of birth with my late father James Matsimella.
In my spare time, I draw or experiment with paint. I also love to write. Writing letters to pen pals is my favourite but at other time, I write poetry. At times of intense emotion, when I’ve just heard earth shattering news, I like to sit down and express myself through a poem. I’ve started writing a story but that’s as far as it goes (hee, hee!). I’ve written plays of which 2 were performed. I’ve also helped to run a play. Nothing big, only class plays or small ones to do in front of the school. These are my hobbies.
Now moving onto my interests. My religion is very important to me. Being a good Christian is important to me. I try my best to be pleasing to God in everything I do. I attend the Church of Christ every Sunday and Wednesday evening. Shakespeare is also one of my interests. I really enjoy learning anything to do with him, especially reading his plays. I consider him to be the best playwright ever. Yet another of my interest is Greek and roman mythology since they are so similar. It just amazes me how they could believe such weird and wonderful things. All the tales that are told are my favourite parts and what amaze me the most.
When it comes to activity, I love taking part. Athletics is my favourite because of my love for sprinting. I try to be a healthy person and my friends, at least my friends at school, know me for being a healthy eater. I try not to eat lot of junk food and get exercise every day. I enjoy being outdoors when I get the chance but I am really a homely person. I love to socialize and meet new people too.
This is me. It was cool sharing myself with you.
STORY – My late and present aspirations
My aspirations. Hmmmm? Well let’s look at this word in the dictionary. Aspiration: a strong desire to achieve an end, an ambition
The first one I ever had was really a typical one for a little girl. I was 7 and I wanted to be a ballerina to prance around gracefully on my tippy toes and perform beautiful twirls as the audience applauds. Once I tried to start this dream off by taking ballet classes at school but that never materialized. That aspiration died soon after.
Then one day, I was chatting to a boy in my Grade 1 class and I asked him what he wanted to be one day. He proudly answered: “a policeman”. I asked him why since being a policeman was a dangerous profession. He quickly replied: “Because they help and protect the community.” This made me think twice and I soon latched on. I day dreamed of riding in my police car and answering on emergency over my walky-talky, as I had seen on TV. Catching the crook and hauling the bad guy off to jail. What an exciting life! But that also faded.
I considered being a lawyer but I’m no good at arguing and lying. A teacher? Nope. After being a teacher for a day, I would be arrested for the brutal murder of an entire class. My excuse? “They are driving me round the bend, officer! Please you have to understand.” I could never put that many lives in danger.
A firewoman? I could never cope with that sort of life. Well later in High school, the subjects I chose and enjoyed helped me to decide more carefully. I got a wonderful score for accounting so I thought I’d be an accountant and save up to open my own business: Spill Café. I’d handle all the finance and my business would soar since my financial side would be in tip top shape. I’ve mentally designed the uniforms and I’ve envisioned the stylish yet funky interior of my Café. Not forgetting the goods. Yup! I’ve thought of everything. All the finer details too. Obviously, there are times when I change my mind. They say when choosing a career, one should go into a field where you’ll be happy. I envisioned myself as an accountant and I’ll tell you, that picture didn’t look happy. You know the usual mindset we have of an accountant: grey suit, solitary office, typing away at the calculator. Nothing interesting happening except if the pen dries! Oh no, dilemma!
I know what makes me happy: Art. My passion is creating beauty. Graphics design was my first choice. Engineering is my second choice since I’ll be doing Physics. I have not decided yet what type of engineering since there are so many kinds that I’ll find out on the way. Plan C is to be an accountant and follow the plan I laid out before.
There’s lots of time really. I’m 15 and in Grade 10. It’s always good to have options. And that’s what I have, many of them!
