WHO I AM:
My name is Shareefah Smith and I am a grade 8 student at South Peninsula High School. My favorite subject at school is History, because it shows me more about my culture and heritage and is what makes us who we are in life.
In 2004, I received a bursary from the Kay Mason Foundation run by Mr Richard Mason, one of the best authors in the world. I was so greatful to be one of the many children who received bursaries, yet I was also excited to have my dreams fulfilled.
I live with my mother, sister and brother. My brother goes to College at Majlish Shura Haafith College and my sister also goes to South Peninsula High. My mother is a receptionist at Eyelink Optometrist.
The subjects that I would like to do in grade 10 are English, Afrikaans, Physics, Biology, History, Home Economics and Xhosa. I would also like to join the history and debating societies at my school.
When I complete my studies at school, I would like to study Law at the University of Cape Town and get my masters of PHD in Law. Thereafter I would like to become an advocate, because I believe that justice is a very important aspect of life. Through my time of studying at U.C.T. I would like to get my driver’s license. In my spare time, I love doing visual arts, a talent which has led me to become one of the best artists in my age category in the Western Cape.
LATEST NEWS:
I did not experience many obstacles this term. The challenge was that my bus fare went up again and now my mother has to pay R55 per week, which is understandable since the petrol has increased but she also has to pay for my brother’s and sister’s fare to university which is too much for her.
I participated in the Cape Argus completion. Where I had to read the Cape Argus for 4 weeks. From Monday to Friday and at the end of each week they would ask us a series of questions on the newspaper. At first my group done really bad and the other teams were way ahead of us, but the last 2 rounds went well, where we came 2nd and 1st. So we are over to the next round which will happen in the third term. The prize is R2000 for each student of the winning team, and a new car for their school, so I am really going to try my best.
I am satisfied with most of my results for the 2nd term, but I know I can do better. My languages has increased from a C to an A and I got the highest percentage for Biology in my grade. I was aiming for an A aggregate but I missed it by 0.3%. I also came 2nd in my grade which is the highest I ever came in my grade and I am really aiming for 1st position next term.
During the third term I will be participating in the Bridge Building completion, a completion that will allow me to win a bursary to attend University. I will also be participating in the 2nd round of the Cape Competition and I will try my best in both competitions.
I plan on studying Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town. I enjoy drawing and designing new things. I also enjoy the subject, Engineering, Graphic and Design which I am very good at. If I don’t study Civil Engineering, I would like to study something in the Health Sciences field. Both my sister and my brother are studying something in the Health Sciences field and I find that what they do is very interesting, especially on genetics.
I would like to thank the Kay Mason Foundation for helping me and my family. I am grateful to be given this opportunity and I will try my best at school so that I can have a successful future
