2011 Report:
I really appreciate being sponsored. I have been putting a lot of effort into my work and improving my aggregates each term. I am praying that I will show a great improvement academically this year, as I know I can do it, I just need to believe it.
2010 was a great year for both South Africa and myself. We celebrated the World Cup which not only exposed South Africa as a tourist attraction but as a country filled with different cultures, and I got through my first year in a challenging high school!
Grade 9 is similar to Grade 8, the difference is the workload. It teaches you to be more organised and accountable. My main goal for Grade 9 is to achieve the same standard as the A Class.
I feel that the educators of the A Class expect a lot from the pupils. I feel they are dividing you into classes to judge how intelligent or hardworking you are. I don't really agree with that and think we should vary the scholars because then those who are not working so hard will be alongside those that are and try to get to the same level. However if you look at it from Principal Isaacs perspective, I suppose he thinks that students will be able to perform better academically if they are with students who have the same level as them. I want to address this matter with Mr. Isaacs as he says we are welcome to come to him if there is something with the school system that we do not agree with. That is on my list for 2011, though I know you can't always blame the teachers or Principal.
When Mr. Isaacs welcomed the Grade 8s in his start of year speech, I felt so excited because now I was one of the experienced pupils and know how enjoyable South Peninsula is so could show the other students the way. This made me and my fellow students feel very proud.
Mr. Isaacs also told us what the top ten ex-Matric students will be studying at university this year. The main subject was an MBA, followed by Politics and Public Relations. He was very pleased, especially with those who are studying politics as he is really keen on the subject. Every morning he informs us of the headlines in the newspapers and at all times tells us what he thinks of it all.
An ex-Matric also spoke called Tyron Van Balla at the welcome speech. Last year he achieved an average of 93.7%, and only missed the Western Cape's top 20 students by 2%. I think you will agree this is a great achievement. Tyron is an inspiration to me as he carries many great qualities such as leadership, hard work, dedication and persistance. He talked all about the need to have these qualities at school. Tyron got an Allan Gray bursary for R50,000. He is an inspiration and I don't see why I can't also have the same tremendous achievement.
Thank you again for sponsoring me and God Bless.
WHO I AM:
My name is Patricia Moss. I am twelve years old of age and I go to St. Augustine’s Primary School in Wittebome, Wynberg. I am a child who wants to get far in life and I want to make a huge success of my life - I believe this can be possible with help from the KMF. I would love to study law when I finish my high school education. This is because of the unreliable justice system in South Africa. I would like to play a part in fixing it.
Apart from being a law graduate I would like to be of help in my community and to less privileged children. At school I do music, ballet, table tennis, first aid and I am also captain of the scholar patrol team. I am a foster child, my parents are very nice people and caring even though they might not be my biological parents; nothing makes me more proud than to call them my parents, they treat me the very same way as they treat their own children. I love them very much.
My school, I think, is the best school; to me it is like a second home because the teachers are warm and loving and it is where I spend most of my time each day. St. Augustine’s is a place I hold close to my heart and it holds a lot of fond memories. My role-models are without any doubt Oprah Winfrey and Sydney Poitier because they both come from poor backgrounds and went through a lot of difficulties when growing up but they still made something out of their lives nonetheless and of course my parents because they teach me morals and values.
I am really happy that I got the opportunity to work towards a KMF scholarship. I have a bright future and if given the chance I will prove this. I hope that I will get the scholarship - I have put in the necessary work and effort. I hope that the discipline I am developing now will help me pursue my chosen path towards qualifying, one day, as an attorney. I thank you very much.
