End 2011 Report:

This year was one of the splendid years of my life; albeit there were challenges I came across and eventually overcame. Grade 10 is a very strenuous grade and it requires a lot of consistent focus.

Academics

The Third term is usually the easiest term as there are no examinations. This is certainly true and I am living testimony that proves this right, I always get phenomenal marks in the third term. As a result, I was in the top 15 of the grade with an overall average of 78,14%. I obtained four A’s in subjects like: Physical Science, Life Orientation, Computer Applications Technology and in Xhosa.  I also attained two B’s in English and in Mathematics and a C in Economics which was 67%. This was my lowest mark. It was my first time doing Economics because I dropped Life Sciences for it. I was very proud of myself to have achieved such good marks.

Giving back to the Community

Earlier this year it came to my senses that I must do something to show my appreciation to the community by offering my time and hands.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for humanity is a non-governmental organisation that works in conjunction with the government enrichment programmes such as the RDP to help improve infrastructure by building houses for people in the townships. I personally appreciate what is done by this NGO and proud of myself for taking part in building houses for the underprivileged. I was rewarded with an award for Outstanding Community Service by the operations manager Andrew.

It is such a great feeling and an honour to know that somewhere there is someone’s   life I have had an impact on merely by offering with the least I have, time and hands. After building the house, we were asked to give words of wisdom and advice on how the owner should keep his new, safe and secured home. This is one of the days I would never forget.

Blisters for Bread

Blisters for Bread is a fun walk/run, this event is held annually. It works with the Peninsula Feeding Scheme in feeding children in the underprivileged schools. By entering then run you pay R30 which is used to feed 16 children somewhere in the Western Cape. I entered and ran 10km and was rewarded with a medal. Blisters for Bread’s aim is to eradicate poverty in the Western Cape schools. Once again it really is a great feeling to know that I have helped feed 16 disadvantaged children somewhere. I was accompanied by other two Kay Mason Foundation scholars, Enathi Ndaba and Xolani Tom.

Greenpop

Greenpop is a growing initiative that specialises in planting trees in the townships and cape flats schools that are unaware of going green. I was involved in their biggest planting where they planted 1000 trees in the schools in the area of Manenberg (Cape Flats).

KMF Bus

I have never taken any chance to thank our bus driver publicly; I believe that this is an opportunity to do that, I really thank him. This is the man that ensures that we get to school on time and safely. Sometimes he even sacrifices his own time to take us to the school events that take place at night and on weekends. His service to us is highly and enormously appreciated.

Choir Award

In September, my school held a cultural assembly where pupils who have shone in the cultural fields were rewarded for their contribution to the school. Here I walked away with an award for choir; I was very proud of myself.

Fourth Term

Camps Bay High School holds a prize-giving ceremony every year and it is called Celebration. This is where pupils are recognised for their hard work. On this I received awards, Academic Endeavour and a President award (Bronze Level). The Academic Endeavour is an award handed to diligent pupils that have shown a great work ethic throughout the year. Presidents’ awards are very prestigious awards I mentioned in my June donor report. This award has Nelson Mandela’s signature on it.

I am now currently working on the Silver Level and I am anticipating receiving it next year.

I was proud of myself and I was also proud of the other KMF scholars that also shone on that night, Mihle Jaxa and Khanya Gulwa and Mbali Desiree Khubheka.

I have recently chosen as a member of the school’s new senior boys Marimba band. The other KMF scholars that made it are Anella Mdutyulwa and Khanya Gulwa; they both made it to the school’s new senior girls Marimba band.

It really makes me proud to see the KMF Students excelling and engaging in the school’s wide range of sport and cultural activities.

Thanks

I thank the Kay Mason Foundation staff (Ms Fatima, Ms Nelly, Ms Nandi, Ms Natasha and Mr Nase) for the love and care they constantly show towards us, it means a lot to us scholars. I also thank those I did not mention your service is tremendously appreciated; I am grateful and thankful to you. Thank you very much to my donor (you are wonderful).

Good luck to Natasha who will swim a very long distance in the Atlantic Ocean in order to raise funds for us. We would like you to know that we are fully behind you and will support you all the way.

This has indeed been a marvellous year; I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy, prosperous new year.

2011 Report:

In the past six months, I have learnt a lot about myself, my peers and the decisions ahead of us. Initialle these decisions have to be considered thoroughly, then made as if there are no negative outcomes. I strongly believe that teenagers should make their own decisions regardless of their peers' assistance, so that if they realise that something goes wrong, they hold themselves responsible. The result is that teenagers can see whether they act as adults or not. They can learn from their mistakes and ask for guidance from trustworthy adults.

ACADEMICS

This year started very well in terms of academic performance, because I now do seven subjects, four chosen by me: Physical Science, Mathematics (pure), Life Science and Computer Application Technology. I chose these subjects because I saw a lot of opportunities in them.

My first term marks were phenomenal and I was proud o fmysefl because achieving good marks is noteasy and normally these subjects are considered as the most difficult. For the first time at high school, I obtained an A in Mathematics.

My second term marks were not as good due to high pressure and lack of time management. I do not blame anyone other than myself for this, and hold myself accountable because I could have been more committed and managed my time better.,

Next term I promise to maintain a good work ethic, enriched with determination and commitment.

EXTRA_CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Earlier this year, I decided to increase my participation in the school's extra- mural activities. By engaging in all the school has to offer, I will learn a lot of new things. I joined INTERACT and ACTA societies.

INTERACT

Interact is a cultureal activity led by learners and a few teachers. This group specialises in community outreach. Interacy helps mostly disadvantaged and underprivileged people in orphanages and special schools. In order to become a member, you must sacrifice your time and what you have.

ACTA

Acta stands for Against Cruelty to Animals. This is a campaign that supports all the animal non-governmental organisations. From both these groups, I have learnt that everyone can offer assistance, even if you have very little.

PRESIDENT AWARDS

This award started in the UK in 1956, where it was known as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Today, more than 120 countries run this award and there are over 100 scholls involved. There are 4 sections that must be tackled, over different periods, depending on the award level. It teaches us valuable skills, such as self-confidence and team skills. The candidates that compolete the Award's mission are rewarded with a certificate and a prestigious bage but mostly importantly with international recognition.

I am currently doing my bronze level.

SOCCER TOUR

I would like to thank the Kay Mason Foundation for making my dream come true and paying for hald the soccer tour. It was held at Victoria Park High School in Port Elizabeth in March. It was an amazing event and I loved it.

EQUAL EDUCATION SUMMIT

I learnt a lot from this NGO, as they fight for equal levels of education in township and ex-Model C schools. They stated that fundamentals in these schools are not covered by the government and the norms and standards are not met. The summit was filled with hot debates and discussions. There were some controversial topics that needed to be covered, but at the end everyone's eyes were opened and people became aware of the inequality of South African education.

The summit made me realise how privileged I am to be at Camps Bay High. This would not have been possible if I had not been chosen to represent the KMF.

I am grateful to the KMF, as if it were not for you, I would not be where I am at the moment.

Thank you.

WHO I AM:

My name is Asongwezwa I’m in grade 8 at camps bay high school. I live with my mother and three siblings in lower crossroads.

This was my first year at an English school but I think I did well; I passed all my subjects apart from economic management science, I feel very bad about that, I only managed to get 47% which in my opinion is bad. I did good in my other subjects, which makes me very proud because I was in a totally new learning atmosphere. I got 83% for life orientation, 84% for technology and my teacher was very proud of me, I got the third highest mark in the class. I got 89% for arts and culture, I was again one of the top achievers in my class.

I did not play any sports this term because I trying to settle in and focus on my studies but I did try to join the marimba band but had just missed the auditions by a day because I’m trying to complete my computer literacy profile. I do plan to play some sort of sport next term.

My aims for next term, improve my marks for economic management science and my English marks. I’m aiming for 60%. I would like to improve my marks for mathematics as well, I managed to get 62% but my goal was 70%.

Personally I think that this went very well for me, I think that my hard work has paid off as well as the lengthy hours of studying.

Many thanks to my KMF sponsor for granting me an opportunity to attend one of the top schools in the province, your help is much appreciated. This report would not be complete if I don’t show my appreciation to the following people: Nelly Tom, my mother for her motivation, and Richard Mason.
