FIRST TERM 2005
My first term started on a rather bad note with the prefects, for various reasons. But I did not let that stop me from enjoying my stay in Little Wood house, a place that I have really grown quite fond of, for the past two years that I have spent here and a place that I have now taken as my real home.
Not much has happened this term, but I have involved myself in more school activities than the previous years. I have spent time here doing things such as debating, drama and probably more next term but I have unfortunately not made the debating team yet because I still have to attend their society and then they will see there if I am worthy or not of joining their team.
Another highlight of my term was the interhouse sports day that was held sometime during the beginning of February. I really enjoyed myself on that day, probably the day I have enjoyed the most during my career here in Wynberg, this is because I cheered my heart off that day. Another thing that took my by surprise was Bridging the Gap which I thought would be boring but it really helped me a lot with most of my subjects especially English, and I have enjoyed it immensely. The Bridging the Gap guys have really helped me a lot and I think that they are taken for granted by the boys in the school even though they are trying to help us and give something back to the school.
WHO I AM
My name is Onwaba Nkayi. I am a grade 8 pupil at Wynberg Boys High School. I am a scholarship student. I live in the hostel with my masters and other boys. I have two brothers. I come from a very poor part of the country. I like watching t.v, reading and eating. To be in a big school like this is very difficult for me because I have never been in a big school like this one – but it’s also exciting.
I am a boy who does not like to give up. I live with my mother and brother. I love astronomy. My favourite astronaut is Yum Gagarin. He was the first man in space in April 1961.
I would like to be a doctor, because I want to save lives. When I am out of the hostel I like to teach my young brother how to spell words and to read, because I want him to follow my footsteps. I like to work on the computer. I also like to spend my time with some of my friends at school, and to play soccer and hockey. My favourite music is Kwaito, R& B and Pop. My favourite book is Shakespeare, Roald Dahl.
Supera Moras
The first time I arrived here I did not even know where I fitted. Everything was new to me. I mean everything was new. I had to make sure that I did well in my academics. In the hostel everything was different. The boys were different. We all came form different places and different cultures. It was difficult for me to choose the right boys to hang out with because I did not know where I fitted.
MY FIRST TERM AT WYNBERG BOYS' HIGH
I have experienced a lot of things in this term. Things like team work, standing up for yourself, and not giving up. I learned most of the things in the grade eight camp. The camp was Wortelgat campside. There I learned very important things like respect, team work, staying.
The main reason that we had the camp was to build a healthy and better relationship with our teachers and peers. I learned to respect nature. I recommend Wynberg Boys High School as one of the best schools in the country and it also has a great reputation, best teachers, great facilities. I have learned that if you want better education you must read and listen to what your teacher tells. When I saw that I did not do well in my academics, I told myself that I will make sure that I do well in sport, but things did not go as I planned because I did not have things to practice with.
I have noticed that you cannot only learn from your teachers, you can also copy the right things that your peers do. My message to other young people out there is: “Don’t be ordinary” (quoted from Justin van Winkel 2001 – Head Prefect).
