End 2011 Report:

My name is Nonzwakazi Mgxaji, and as you know, I attend Immaculata Girl’s High School. This is my third and fourth term report. These last two terms at school went very well. Our school hosted an event, the fashion show, and it was huge success. I enjoyed myself very much and so did everyone that attended. Other than that, there weren’t any other glamorous happenings...

Being the chairperson of the Environmental Club, the club members and I not only cleaned up the environment, but also made a huge a difference by planting trees and plants. We also started our own herb and indigenous garden. I am very proud to say that we uplifted and educated our fellow students and school in an environmental manner...As the Inter-active group, we decided to collect food baskets called ‘Buckets of Love’ and donated them to the underprivileged families in South Africa. Our main aim was to help feed these families and pass on the spirit of love especially during this festive season.

The highlights of these two terms were that I applied for a study programme called SHAWCO for my grade 12 year. I then went to the University of Cape Town to write to write an entrance exam for the SHAWCO programme. It went very well and amongst more than 600 applicants, I was privileged enough to be one of the 200 who were provisionally accepted into the programme...I was also shortlisted to a prefect at my school and after a long process of voting and evaluation, I was chosen to be one of the 17 prefects. I know this is a huge responsibility for me and a lot of pressure on me to maintain my schoolwork standard and the prefect position at once. But, I am willing to try hard and do my best.

My third term exams went quite good. They weren’t too bad but I must say, I felt the pressure of being in grade 11 especially since I’ve been struggling a little with a few subjects, Physical Science and English. I am now currently writing my final exams and so far so, they are going well.

My plans for the holidays are to have huge amounts of fun with family and close friends to live up to the festive season fever. I also plan to prepare myself for my grade 12 and draw up a strategic plan on how to achieve my goals and objectives for my grade 12 year. I’m not only planning to have fun but I would also like to broaden and expand my knowledge by listening and considering other people’s opinions that will help me to grow mentally and make and make better decisions about future experiences.

So, I plan to attend any educational and motivational workshops and conferences available. This time, I have to myself, I can reflect on this year’s progress and mistakes so that I can plan for a prosperous yet challenging year ahead. I plan to do career evaluation, from there I will job shadow a person in the career field I have chosen. This will allow me to be certain about my decisions of what I want to do exactly. From all the activities I’ll be engaging myself in, I will end this year by letting loose and having a little bit of fun like spending time at the beach.

The Kay Mason Foundation means life to me. You have given me an educational life full of wonderful opportunities and made me realise that there is hope, not only for me, but for all those deserving hard workers out there. I’ve also come to the realisation that I can do better and make a difference, and that I am allowed to dream big. KMF means a special and great beginning for a challenging life after school. This makes me a better person by being humble and appreciative for what is being done for me.

I, Nonzwakazi Mgxaji, pass my gratitude onto you, showing that I thank you for being there for me and for giving me this unforgettable lifetime opportunity.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Mid-2011 Report:

My name is Nonzwakazi Mgxaji. I am currently doing Grade 11 at Immaculata (RC) Girls High School.

My first term in Grade 11 felt very much the same as Grade 10. I guess that was due to the fact that the first term is always the easiest term. Also, being in a class with the very same people I've been with for two years made it much easier. The first term went by very quickly but it made me grow as a person, knowing that I am one step closer to being in Matric (Grade 12).

There weren’t many events and activities that happened during the first term although there was one that stood out and will always be memorable. This was the Life Sciences excursion we attended at the Aquarium. While some thought of it as boring and old news, I found it quite interesting and educational. It's always good to gain knowledge about things you knew nothing about and broadening your knowledge to a greater extent. I believe as a person, you can never learn enough. I must say, the reason of the excursion being memorable wasn't only due to the learning experience I received, but also a slightly personal reason.

The second term on the other hand was a term that I'd like to call a ' wake-up call' term. During this term, everyone had become more playful, me more than most. I took things as they came and was very relaxed about everything. My Physical Sciences teacher kept warning us about our sudden change of behaviour. I must say, it was during this term that I realised how difficult and draining Grade 11 was. I've had many people tell me that Grade 11 is one of the most difficult Grades ever. I hadn't believed this until the second term.

A few events went on during the second term. I was chosen to be one of three Accounting learners who were to attend an Accounting Workshop. We were invited by the Deloitte Company to attend the Deloitte Scholar Day Programme. There, we were provided with exposure to a career in Chartered Accountancy, as well as a career at a professional services firm. I felt that this was a good way to gain sufficient information to make a well informed career choice. We had many speakers coming to talk to us about their life as a varsity student as well as university selection. We also learnt about financial assistance that is available to us.

After the workshop, a few of us went to the University of Cape Town Open Day. This was a great experience for me because I learnt about many courses or careers that they offered in each faculty.

As a school, we also went to the University of Western Cape as our Life Orientation Career Outing. This was another great opportunity as I got to see how life is in varsity and this made me hope only the best for my future.

A few of our Grade 11 learners got involved with Courting Justice. They are busy working on creating and filming a documentary to be screened at the Labia Theatre in August 2011.

Sadly, towards the end of the term, we lost a few of our loved ones. Due to this, many people had some unhappy moments of mourning.

The June exams were very challenging and as a result, my marks have dropped. That is why I plan to change for the coming term, not for anyone else but myself. I want to improve my marks in any possible way that I can. I aim to end procrastination and work hard for everything.

As the Chairperson of the Environmental Club, I also aim to work hard alongside with the team in order to achieve our goals. I want to use this short holiday to  prepare myself as I am on this journey to being in Matric and try to remain focused and disciplined at all times. I know that through working hard, I am capable of achieving the marks that I want to achieve. I strongly believe in the quote "There's no such thing as perfection. But in striving for perfection we can achieve excellence" by Vince Lombard.

On that note, I'd like to end by giving my special sincere gratitude to the KAY MASON FOUNDATION for making me a better person. Giving me this wonderful opportunity is something which I will always be grateful of. One day I would also love to give back by educating scholars the same way that Kay Mason is doing for us as Kay Mason scholars.

Thank you

WHO I AM:

I am Nonzwakazi Mgxaji and I live in Khayelitsha with my mom and my little brother. I am 14 years old and I was born on the 29th of June 1994.

I’m in Grade 8 and attend Immaculata High School (Girls).

My favourite subjects are Mathematics and Natural Science. I would like to become a psychologist or psychiatrist one day because I love helping people. I figured that if I become one of these, I would help a lot of people because there are many people out there who need help (mentally).

At school I do spiritual dancing as an extra-mural activity and I also play netball. I love reading and doing puzzles as well. I’m very shy, but I can be talkative at times.

I love school and I take it seriously because without education I don’t see any future for me. I’ve always believed that education is the key to success. At school I’m a consistent worker, hardworking and I try my best in all that I do.

I am a person who likes to face challenges no matter what. I am very friendly and am an understanding person. I have lots of ideas and an active mind. I’m very choosy and always want the best. I am also very funny. I know how to show respect to people.

I see my greatest challenges as achieving all my goals and being successful one day. I am someone who is proud of myself because, I am who I am and I do not imitate anyone else. I am the way God created me. I am unique and special.

LATEST NEWS:

My second term at school was wonderful. I actually got to know the girls in my class better and they seem to be more kind than I thought they were. They have very interesting personalities and that’s what I like about them. I really enjoyed my second term. My second term was lovely and fun. I love my school very much and I intend to enjoy all my years at this school. There is nothing that I can complain about. There are quite a few activities to do. Besides that I really enjoyed everything even though the work was very difficult. I am always willing to learn because I know that by wanting to learn, I will gain wisdom and grow in all that I do. The exams were also very difficult but I did my best because I truly believe that if you do your best. God will do the rest.

The activities that I am involved with, netball which is really fun and spiritual dancing. I’m also involved in “Interact “ where we make bread and do other good things for people who are less fortunate than ourselves.

High School is fun but can be difficult at times. As a learner you need to work very hard, focus and concentrate during lessons, have a positive attitude and behavior and persevere. I also believe that you’ll be A-FAR-AWAY just by having respect for your educators and fellow learners.

I would also like to say thank you to everyone involved with the Kay Mason Foundation for accepting me as a KMF scholar. I am much honored to be KMF scholar, especially because I never thought I stood a chance, as I am a shy girl. It’s a great honor to be a KMF scholar, but it is also a very big responsibility.

Lastly, I would like to say thanks again for making a difference in children’s lives and I hope and pray that the foundation will grow from strength to strength for many more years to come and make all the difference. The blessing of God’s love, peace and joy is yours now and always.

THANK YOU!

DANKIE! ENKOSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
