KMF Scholar and Parent Workshop PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday the 12th of February the Kay Mason Foundation held a workshop for scholars and parents at Camps Bay High school, attended by 25 KMF scholars.

As learners and parents arrived they were given refreshements and a warm welcome by the KMF team before splitting off into groups. The scholars went to work with KMF Trustee and Educator Chris Chivers, currently Minor Canon and Precentor at Westminster Abbey. From 1999-2001 Chris was Canon Precentor at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town, where he also worked as a freelance journalist and chaired the inter-faith board of the Cape Town Holocaust Centre. Chris was a teacher for 7 years and also served on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the KMF's Patron.

Chris read the scholars a short story, "Power" by Jack Cope, a South African novelist, short story writer and poet. The scholars then considered the role of each of the characters in the story and examined how anyone can make a difference, no matter what their status in society.

The scholars further looked back on the highs and lows of last year, and outlined their goals for 2011, academic, extra-mural and personal.

The rest of the team went through deadlines, events and 2011 plans with the parents, and even took a group photo so the parents could pretend they were back at school!

A good day by all, and the scholars are looking forward to a follow-up workshop with KMF Founder and Chairman, Richard Mason, with the scholars next week!
