The KMF is proud to announce that our Founder and Chairman, Richard Mason, won a Merit in Philanthropy Award at the Inyathelo Philanthropy Awards on the 15th of November 2010 in Cape Town. As Richard's name was announced, the tables erupted in applause!
Inyathelo is the South African Institute for Advancement, and the awards were created to acknowledge inspirational philanthropists. During the week of the awards, Inyathelo also organised a philanthropy conference called "Our World, Our Responsibility" at which the KMF team were delegates. There to celebrate with Richard were several of the brilliant KMF scholars, including new trustees, Nadine Moodie and Siyamthemba Mrawli who are both at university studying Law and Industrial Sociology, Economic History and International Political Economy respectively. Also attending were current scholars Ziyana Lategan and Nicholas Van Dyk, the KMF team, Richard's family and friends, and two of our donors; Le Roux Van der Westhuizen, CEO of the Milennium Trust, and a long-time partner in making a practical difference to the lives of disadvantaged South Africans, and Al-Karim Ramji, KMF's Treasurer and Trustee. We would also like to say an enormous thank you to Al-Karim who, apart from already sponsoring several of our scholars, spontaneously agreed on the night to fund a fence and borehole for our rural upliftment project in the Eastern Cape, Lulutho.
The KMF initiated Project Lulutho last year, aiming to alleviate poverty through education. On our 38 hectare site, we have begun implementing a Permaculture farm, a Business School and Enterprise Development Centre to give rural adults the skills to set up sustainable businesses. We are also currently expanding our youth development program, giving the opportunity for our KMF scholars and other young South Africans to visit the project, engage with and work to solve the issues facing their rural peers. For more information, please visit our website: www.lulutho.org.
We are very proud of Richard and committed to ensuring the continuing success of the KMF and Lulutho, to give South Africans the brightest possible futures.
With best regards, The KMF team
