2011- Naledi Maponopono:
At the moment I can say that everything is going well academically and family wise because I have been receiving nothing but good marks and the work has been interesting. I must admit that the jump from high school to university is quite big but I feel at a great advantage because of the school I was privileged enough to attend due to your heartfelt generosity. This will prove beneficial for the rest of my life.
I have experienced many difficulties regarding varsity life because it impacts you very quickly when you are not in a good financial position. I received a residential place at the university as it was getting harder to wake up at 4am every morning to get to school on time. The other barrier at home was that we do not have Internet access therefore my work would have suffered.
Now that I live at varsity, my mother can only afford to give me pocket money of R40 a week, which is insufficient because I need money for printing and study snacks. I then have to borrow money from friends, which is very embarrassing, and I really hate doing it but I feel sad and sorry for my mom at the same time because she has no more money to give.
I am also finding it quite difficult not having a laptop at varsity. It is hard to work efficiently because I often have to stand in a line for a computer at the varsity lab and at night I have to walk back from upper campus to res, which is quite dangerous. A laptop would allow me to work from my room. I have however not let this affect my marks but am sure they would sky rocket if I could find an available one.
At the moment though I’m busy with exams and I wrote my first one yesterday, which went very well. I also anticipate that the two remaining exams will go well too.
When I graduate I will actually have two degrees because I am taking a BA LLB meaning which I will have a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in PPA (Public Policy and Administration, African Indigenous Languages Studies and Xhosa as well as a LLB degree. The law subjects will commence in my second year of study. My degree is very broad and challenging and I am enjoying every minute of it.
As of now, I am not entirely sure what I want to do in the future but what I do know is I would love to work in a place such as the Pan African Languages Board of South Africa, and possible be a lawyer or interpreter for people who do not understand English in any court and so forth. I basically want to work with people because I am a very bubbly person and love engaging with people.
Thank you to the KMF and my donors for allowing me the opportunity to go to such a prestigious school. I will forever cherish all that I learnt there and use it as a tool to enhance my future.
PREVIOUS NEWS:
In the term past I bettered my Physical Science by 20%, I also became friends with other girls in my new class and still be good friends with my old friends. I also went to Namibia with my school, which was fun.
I have developed in the way that I have become more independent; I also learnt to ask questions if I don’t know something.
My results weren’t too bad. I can still do better than I am doing at present.
Achievement and goal wise I am still aiming to do well in all my subjects at school.
I am going to meet up with some of my friends, and do some of my required community partnership hours. I also want to spend time with family over the Easter weekend.
This scholarship means a lot to me because I wouldn’t have been able to go to St Cyprian’s School and have all the opportunities I have to go to places around the world
LATEST NEWS:
The second term was a blast. My marks were good, but not great. I will certainly improve on most of them. Though others were not very pleasing, but not a fail, my Accounting mark of 72% was one I was very proud of even though it was not my highest. I was and still am very proud of myself.
The second highlight of my term was my society (the Xhosa Club) being voted “society of the term”. This is a society which was not much recognized, but once I joined it, it grew from strength to strength. I was commended at my school for this.
This term has started out great. I am efficient and I am working hard. I will produce results that are to the best of my ability. I am striving for nothing but the best (nil nisi optimum) as my school motto goes.
Once again, thank you very much for giving me this opportunity. It is much appreciated.
