End 2011 Report:
These two terms I had so much fun and sweated a bit, but other than that things were awesome and mouth-watering. I must say that school life became better and better as time went by.
TERM THREE
This term the school was very calm and relaxed, because it was not an exam term. This is where we had all the fun, all the year’s events and award ceremonies were all done at this term. I took part in one of the most cheered events by our school learners, the CBHS’s Got Talent. This is where we as a school showcase each learner’s talents, and compete against one another. I unfortunately did not get that far because I lost on the third round: I was competing as a Stand-Up comedian. We had so many sports and cultural initiatives we as a school took part in; I broke the school’s record of being the learner who plays most sports.
SPORTS
SOCCER: I always played soccer at school and finally after so many years of trying to get in, I got in to the first team school squad. Although I saw how big the other players from other schools were, I still went to the trials and made the squad. I cannot wait for my first game as a Camps Bay High School first team squad, as a striker. My play mates were already starting to call me “MESSI”, but I said NO to that because I do not want to be compared to someone else. I want someone else to be compared to me, not the other way around. So I came up with my own name “LUH”, which is a combination of both Spain and Brazil. I love that name so much because it uses my first letters of my name and just adds a couple of vibes in it by putting an “H”. This name will be the name to rule the school, and will be on people’s mouths and minds for a very long time.
HOCKEY: As a hockey player I started off burning with grief to make a name for myself, but my fire died before I even got that far. I did not go to all the practices and that kind of got me in trouble, especially as a first team player. I just came and took the position in first team like it belonged to me, but the season ended without me fully proving myself.
CULTURE
With culture it has always been the choir that I take part in. Then there were the quarterly concerts that I took part in and actually managed to produce an amazing piece.
TERM FOUR
This term it was very stressful and depressing because it was the exam term, everyone in school was so uptight and tense that the school vibe almost came to a halt. I was stressing over exams. The school sports and cultural events stopped quickly, to try and give everyone enough time.
I want to thank you for everything and you should know that your funding is really making a difference to others. May God be with you and Bless you for your good hearts.
Mid -2011 Report:
The first term of 2011 was very hectic and fun.
On March the 23rd my schoolmates and I, who were chosen to go to Italy, departed at one o’clock. Arriving at the airport was one of the highlights of my life.
It was my 1st time in an airport and it felt like I was in a doorway to heaven already, and as soon as moved towards the departure side, I knew that this would be the best two weeks of my life.
When we I arrived in Istanbul the 1st thing I saw was that it was seriously cold out there compared to South Africa. Then we had to wait for two hours before our next flight would arrive that would take us to Venice. We spent the whole two hours in Istanbul roaming around trying to find what to buy. It was time for Venice and I was so excited because I had seen how Venice looks on the Assassins Creed game and it looked super sexy. When I got there I was surprised to find that Venice looked exactly the same as it did in the Assassins Creed game.
The 1st thing I liked about Venice is that people from there were very nice and they made us feel as if we were kings and queens or god’s angels or something. Imagine me (the shortest guy in the whole group) jumping up and down in a big city like Venice. Our host’s parents picked us up and when I got home they told me to unpack and have a shower. Although my host family was sort of fluent in English, they still spent 90% of the time speaking Italian in front of me and I found that quite strange. The following day they took me out mountain biking and it was awesome.
But my best day was when we went ice skiing. My 1st round of going up and down the mountain was very sad and frustrating because I fell down a lot. My pants and underwear were completely wet and as I was about to give up when things started to look better for me. I finished the whole track without falling and that success boosted my moral and I kept on going, and the more I continued to ski up and down, the better I became.
The best part about Italy was the food! Food was the thing I enjoyed the most in Italy simply because it was great and I am a huge fan of food. But the food that my family cooked for me was not good, not because it tasted bad but because it was light and I hate food that does not make me full. And all of our host parents kept giving us the same packed lunch all the time, “HAM”.
When I came back to South Africa or must I rather say Cape Town, I thought that the fun was over but I was wrong because us Kay Mason Foundation scholars were chosen to go to an Equal Education summit and it was great. I took the initiative to practice my debating skills and I am glad to say that I am pretty good. I will be the best lawyer you will ever find. I spoke a lot and raised some important points, and my peers and an NGO representative came up to me and told me that I was really intelligent and if I continued on this way, and then I would go far. That made me feel really happy.
I am grateful to all the Kay Mason Foundation and my donors are doing for me. Without them I would not be able to experience any of these amazing things. Thank you so much.
All the best,
Luvo
WHO I AM:
My name is name Luvo Mpande. I am 14 years old and I live in Khayelitsha, one of the largest townships in Cape Town.
I am in Grade 11 at Camps Bay High School. My favourite subjects are English, Natural Science, Economic Management Science, Xhosa and Life Orientation.
My hobbies are reading, playing soccer, rugby and boxing. I also like composing rap song and poems. I spend most of my free time reading novels to improve my writing, spelling and my English vocabulary. My favourite colour is red. I am a short boy who likes laughing a lot. I don’t like fighting, but if someone bullies me, I fight back. I am a talkative person and I’m not shy at all.
I have no parents. They both died when I was still young. My mother died when I started Grade 1, when I was seven years old. My father died when I was in Grade 4, when I was ten years old. So I don’t really know them and if they didn’t leave photos of themselves, have been able to say I had parents. But they left me some clues like photos and the diary that my mother wrote in every day.
I don’t like violence and I hate drugs and alcohol. I am a boy who has a very high self-esteem and I believe in myself. I have two goals that I really want to fulfill. They are: to have a happy family and to live in peace with other people and my family. My dream is to be a scientist and my second one is to be a pilot. I am boy who has lots of vision, goals and I want to fulfill each and every vision. The thing that I really desire is to do well in my studies and to become someone in the world, so that I can take care of myself.
I am afraid of dying because I have a big life to live for; I know I am capable of becoming anything I want to be in the world. I want to enjoy my life like other children, but in a different way that will take me somewhere. I pray that God will give me enough strength and I know that when you believe in yourself, everything is possible.
