2011:
My name is Kim Nduna, aged 21, and currently a third year student at the University of Cape Town. I am studying a Bachelor of Social Sciences, majoring in Sociology and Social Development. I'm an Alumni of the Kay Mason Foundation. I was very fortunate in receiving sponsorship to go to St Cyprian's School in Cape Town, South Africa where I did my grade 8 to 12. I want to thank all those that supported me for their generosity. They have enabled me to change my life in a way I never could have done alone. Since then I have been enjoying my studies at University and hope to further doing a post-graduate diploma next year if all goes well. I am still grateful today for what the Kay Mason Foundation has done for me as it has shown me a different way of life that would not have been possible previously. It took me out of an environment that had no bright future to one which showed me that there are many ways to life. I hope you will keep supporting Richard Mason in all he does as he empowers children of South Africa to become role models within their communities. Thank You, Kim Zanele Nduna
PAST REPORTS:
My Name is Kim Zanele Nduna. I am 15 years old and currently in grade 10 at St Cyprian's school.
I am in the boarding house there and I find it very easy to be in the boarding house. In grade 1 I was a day girl and I used travel for one and a half hours in the morning to get to school.
Being in the boarding house makes me do more activities and I get to do more homework than I used to.
I like to think of myself as an open minded person, who is Cool and very hyper. Some people think of me as a very talkative person, who laughs a lot and someone who's not scared of anything except for animals.
I have grown to be mature since grade 8. Grade 8 and 9 were very tough years and I was still trying to fit in. I'm enjoying school at the moment. I have got exams coming up, which is not exciting. Otherwise, I have found school very interesting with all the things we're learning at the moment.
The thing I enjoy about school is learning all these different things, especially in geography.
Grade 10 is a tough year, but I'm getting there. My school subjects are English, Afrikaans, German, Mathematics, business economics and geography.
With these subjects I find my subjects very challenging but life is all about taking those certain challenges.
Through my years I have met my best friends called Sara and Claire. In grade 10 we all have to do 20 hours of community service.
I am doing Sarah Fox Convalescent Hospital and Maitland Cottage Hospital. Sarah Fox is a hospital for children who are sick and burnt and Maitland is a hospital for children with broken legs and whose legs are skew which have been fixed. Some people work with dogs during weekends and some go to old age homes and read books to them.
I am on the Girl Child in Africa committee, which deals with how we can raise money for the school to support girl children in South Africa. I am in the school choir and the Chamber choir. I like the chamber choir more, because we sing nice jazz songs, not that I don't like big choir, it's just that in chamber choir we sing nice jazz songs and in the big choir the songs are very slow. Other than that everything is good.
WHO AM I?
Hi, my name is Kim Zanele Nduna and I am 12 years old. I was born on the 23 of April 1990 at the Paarl General Hospital. My mother told me that when I was born, it was cold and she was so nervous about my birth, she cried for like two hours.
I have a mother, three brothers and two sisters. I know you guys must be wondering why I didn’t put my father in; no he died when I was in Standard 1 and that left us with financial problems. It was so hurtful because he used to buy me everything that I wanted, unlike my mum; she always says that she doesn’t have any money like now I understand why she said she didn’t have any money: it’s because I participated in everything at my old school. My mother told me I don’t have to play every sport there at my school, like every afternoon. After school, we often play a sport but then I need money for the taxi to go home and because my mum doesn’t have any money, I don’t play the sport.
I love the colour red because our house has red face bricks and inside our house we have painted it red. I love to wear red tops and skirts.
My favourite sports are basketball, softball and netball. I started basketball when I was 10 in Grade 5 and I became vice-captain. I played softball in Grade 7 and I’ve played netball every Saturday (and we won all the matches!)
My vision
My biggest ambition is to become a doctor because of two major reasons. The first and most hurtful one is that for 2 years of my life, I had to watch my late dearest father suffering from Stroke disease and I couldn’t help. The second one is that I want to search for a cure to help HIV/AIDS people because this virus has no mercy and it kills both young and old.
STORY – THE LOLLYPOPS
Let me tell you the lollypops’ story. I was in Grade 5 and I used to tell my aunt every time the school was going out that I needed money to pay for the outings and buy sweets and chips to eat on the way to the beach or the park. She told me that she would buy one packet of sweets so that I could sell them at school. The packet costs 6 Rand and there are a hundred sweets in the packet so I got 10 Rand; that means I got 4 Rand. I went on until the year ended.
In Grade 6, it was the Grade 7’s tour to Oudtshoom and Mosselbaai so they sold chips and everything. I told my mother that I wanted to sell some lollypops at school but she said ‘let’s try chips first’ so I did and I got some money. My mother bought some groceries and paid for my transport and the money that was left she paid my school fees. I had 10 Rand left and I bought 1 packet of lollypops with it.
The first day when I got home, my cousins cried for my lollypops so my mother told me to give them some and then tell their father that they took the lollypops and that he must pay for them.. You know what he did? He just looked at me, said nothing and didn’t pay for the lollypops I gave to his children. When I went to school the next morning, the children came to see me to buy but I didn’t want to sell anymore.
In Grade 7, they told us we are going to have a tour to Bredarsdaip so we could sell anything. At first, I sold hotdogs and I got a lot of money so I bought cosmetics for myself for the tour. Another day, I needed 10 Rand and nobody would give me the money but I asked a teacher and she gave the money to me. I could sell lollypops again and I went on and on selling lollypops.
FIRST TERM
Hi my name is Kim Zanele Nduna and I’m studying at St Cyprian’s girls high.
My first day of school was not what I’d expected to be, because I thought that. I was going to be a stranger instead to my surprise. I was welcomed by other students and I saw two students with whom I was at an interview and we are in the same grade. I started talking to them. We went to the hall where they showed us our mentors and my mentors name is Chantal oh she is nice. After that they showed us our classes and our class teachers her name is Lauren Schwartz.
After that a week ago we got a lot of projects and I did all of them. The first one was a history family tree, geography all about moons, maths project fashion technology all about bead work and a lot of assignments and I did all of them all one by one. I even enjoy Romeo & Juliet we even dramatized the story and I also like the languages, English, Afrikaans, Xhosa and German.
We were told to play at two sports a week I wanted to play softball and indoor hockey but I couldn’t, because of my transport. I didn’t tell anyone about this I knew that I would get in trouble as my journey is 1 and a half by train beside taxi. As time goes on, I learn to make new friends and I enjoy their company Amanda the most likes to scream at me and I go 'Amandla' than she would say 'Ngawethu' they always invite me to Grand West or to other school’s fashion shows and I always tell them sorry guys I live too far.
This term for our first outing, we went on for team building near Camps bay and my team won. Our second outing was an orientation programme at Rocklands centre in Simonstown and our last outing was not very far; we went to the archives to check some details about our families it is here in Cape town and actually I didn’t find anything about my family
