End Report 2011:

Greetings to you.

I am Kholo Konisani. Once again I am bringing you the news letter of the second half of the year, about school, the Kay mason Foundation, Boarding house and my Life.

School

At Camps Bay High we are proudly Camps Bay. This is all about belonging to the community, being part of and contributing to what the school does. We are also  unique or different and we are diverse. This sometimes makes the school more enjoyable.

On the first week of the fourth term we had the school celebration for the matriculates, while we had to show our different talents while at the same time we were getting to know our prefects for 2012. I had to perform in a school choir, which was a very nervous moment for me, however, it was great. And the best part of it all is when the prefects were revealed.  One of the K.M.F scholars got nominated. I was very happy, even though I did not become one, because I only came in grade 10 at the school, which limited my chances of becoming one, I did not feel bad because I knew that was not the end of the world.

Academically

In third term I have made some wonderful improvement in my standard in some of my subjects. However, I am still struggling with physical science at times.

On the 27th of July we had the science expo. For science students only. We had to work in pairs. The project was to come up with any topic that we would like to educate to tohers and create awareness together with resolutions. So we did ours on smoking. It was successful; however we did not make it to the finals, because the competition was very tough.

In Life orientation, I had to job shadow a career I would like to do after school, just to help make up my mind and get an idea of that particular career. I went to the physiotherapists, which fascinates me. I learnt a lot from them and saw the actual things that they do. It was a great experience.

Maths is getting better these days. I wrote an assignment and i got 82% for it and I am in the top 15 of my maths class, which makes me even happier.

On the 15th of November I did my final drama practical. It was so good, in that my principal came to congratulate me after the performance. *smile*...

I do not know about fourth term yet, because we have not started with the exams.

Culturally

On the 29th of august we had the cultural assembly awards. I am very proud to say I got an award and a scroll for choir. I joined a committee called ACTA for the animals at school; however the program is going to start running next year.

Sports

I did not do any sport in these two terms.

Boarding house

As I am a resident in the boarding house, it still feels good to have such an amazing people around me, that are working extremely hard to make sure that I become successful, therefore I appreciate each and everything that both my carers and the K.M.F staff do for me. I promise to use every opportunity I get and I can to make them proud.

Transport; in the transport our bus driver (Akhona) that takes us to and from school, take good care of us. We respect him, he also respects us. He always tell us to put our seatbelts on for our safety, even though sometimes we get silly and panic, we still do it because we have to. He makes us laugh at some points. We love him.

Kay Mason Foundation

In the K.M.F staff, there are such incredible staff that do major work in my life.

On the 20th of August we had a K.M.F workshop with Mama Nandipha Madolo-the facilitator. She was great and motivating, I really learnt a lot from her. She told us the way forward after the workshop, that we should do whatever is asked of us and try to throw ourselves 100% in our school work and be always be positive about it.

I like the word ''appreciation'', because I am not going to school because I can, it is because of the Kay mason`s effort so I appreciate it. I am grateful of all the people that have an impact in my life.

My Life

In everything I do, I always think back to where the K.M.F approached me. I was in a disadvantaged school and not exposed to the great opportunities out there. However, now I am experiencing things I never thought I would experience in my life because of the K.M.F.

Richard Mason is such an inspiration to me, even though sometimes I get out of hand and become inappropriate, stupid and unprofessional and annoy him, he still inspires me. I love him; he is the reason behind where I am today. He is tolerant and humble, but he does not take any nonsense. He is the person of people. He shows me right from wrong. I learn a lot from him as I am growing.

This is my pledge for next year: I pledge to work hard, I won’t allow any barriers. I want to live the most comfortable life. I will make it no matter what comes my way, I won’t stop striving for the highest. I see myself successful one day and will do the same that the K.M.F did for me.

Thank you very much to everyone who has had an impact in my life and have a wonderful christmas and happy new year...God bless you all.

Mid- Report 2011:

The first term is always a wake up term for us as we begin to adjust to the academic demands of a new and higher grade.

I was very happy to see my self in grade 11 as it was always my wish to be in that grade, so finally it came through. I thought grade 11 was going to be an extremely hard grade but so far, it has not been that straining, because I achieved marks that are a bit better than last year’s marks. I hope next term I will improve further.

Sports

On the 20th of March, we as a team went to a netball clinic in Stellenbosch. The week was fully packed with continues activities, team drills, fitness, as well as several matches. We did exceptionally well and this has been a very great experience for me.

Interact

As a member of interact, we had another exciting mission which was to collect Easter Eggs for homeless children. We also made tons of cash selling cakes, milk tarts and other goodies. I participated in a 200 and 400 M races, and those were by far the most exciting moments of my time.

Library

I was chosen as a student librarian, I even got a Librarian BADGE. That made me even more proud of myself than before. I am looking forward to improving my marks next term, go from bad to good or even better.

2nd Term:

June or second term was very tough due to exams and other things, but mostly exams. I learnt a lot in Biology, which was one of my Highlights this term. We dissected a heart and a kidney to see what is what and how it works. This was very interesting and scary at the same time.

It was once again Exam time but this term it was my first Exam as a grade11 leaner. I studied a lot this term, especially in science but was very disappointed at my results because they were far from what I expected.

Interact

This time we had to collect brad tags as to try to provide a free wheelchair for someone. We managed to collect over a million and collected unwanted books for libraries and schools in the townships.

CAMP

Then finally the Exams were over and that meant a grade 11 “CAMP” for us. This camp was a Leadership Camp but we had a lot of fun and learnt a lot. This I can not say much about it, as I am sure that all other grade 11 learners at my school will probably write about it, the only thing I can tell you is that, this was the most exciting event of my life as a Camps Bay High School student and it could be the best camp ever!

This holiday I will be extremely busy with my Science expo and I want it to be perfect.

I would love to thank every one who is part of the KMF team and thanks for making me have this wonderful term...

WHO I AM:

My name is Kholo Khonisani. I’m 14 year old girl. I live in Lower Crossroads in Philippi, a township in Cape Town.

I attend Heideveld High School. My class teacher is Mr. Paulse. He is quite a good teacher and he understands me at all times.

I’m interested in reading and singing. These are activities which I like to do at school too. I normally play netball in my community.

My family members are my mom, dad, and my 4 brothers. I am the only girl at home. My parents are not employed. My mother receives a grant to support us, to buy what we need.

My father has a car which he uses to make money for us to buy food and pay the debts we make during the month. My elder brother is still looking for a job to also contribute towards groceries etc. My other 3 brothers are still at school.

I must say thanks to God for He has kept my family and provided all my needs through His many blessings. I have a great family. I appreciate my family a lot.

One day I would like to be a Medical Scientist. I would also like to help people with HIV/AIDS or to help them with love and care or open a centre for them. This is how I want my life to be one day.

LATEST NEWS:

This term was the very interesting term. This term has been good to me in many ways, but in other ways it was not good. Particularly the way the gangsters interrupt my study, and try to steal from me.

I stayed to speak out about my things, I’m not an open person but my friends are open and actually speaking out is good, and helps you express your emotions. This term brought about changes in me. I worked hard, but I found that the number of gangsters and bullies in my school make it hard to learn.

They rob us after school. They like to rob us of our own school bags, bus tickets and school shoes. When we are in our classes they like burn and light the crickets and that’s disturbing us.

I also joined a peace club, dedicated to fighting xenophobia, HIV and AIDS, Drugs and teenage pregnancy.

This term, two learners died in a fight. They were fighting with knives and guns.

KMF note - Thanks to the generosity of KMF donors, Kholo has been moved to one of the best schools in the country.
