FORMERLY ‘COLOUREDS-ONLY’ STATE SCHOOLS:
School Type: State, co-ed day school. Livingstone High was a former coloured school, and was highly disadvantaged by relentless under-funding during the Apartheid years. School size: 980 boys and girls Academic Results: Despite its history of disadvantage, Livingstone still manages to achieve excellent academic results. It consistently produces 100% Matric passes with a high number of A-aggregate dfistinctions. A significant number of pupils go on to complete university degrees and take up leadership positions in society. Facilities: The school has recently been able to build a school hall on its tiny campus, which has added much value to corporate activities. However, the school is still challenged by meager resources and the need to keep school fees affordable for local communities. This means that the school has to focus on its academic programme and is not able to offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Despite these limitations the school continues to promote academic excellence, critical thinking and decision making. It seeks to prepare informed and responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to the development of a just, non-sexist, democratic society. Hence students from Livingstone are confident, committed achievers. Fees per annum: R 6 300 which includes tuition and support for extra curricular activities.
School Type: State, co-ed day school. As in the case of Livingstone High, South Peninsula High is a former “coloured” school. In 2006 it won awards from the Education Department for the most improvement in the Senior Certificate Examinations as well as the most improved performance in Mathematics Higher Grade. It was one of the first 11 schools to participate in the Khanya Mathematics Project, which is an Education Department initiative to enhance Mathematics, Science and Technology education in the Facilities: The school has limited physical space and uses a community sports ground for outdoor sporting activities. The school has 46 computers and the learner/PC ratio is 19:1. Due to financial constraints, the school is able to offer limited sports and cultural activities.
