Cleo Eland

Cleopatra Eland is one of the first four KMF Scholars. She began attending St. Cyprian's School in 1999 at the age of 13. She's now 17 and in her second last year. Here's an account of her term...

This term has been one of my most memorable experiences ever. It started off with organizing the matric dance (senior prom). My task in all of this was to allocate the grade 11’s who were waitressing to certain tables according to what the seniors requested and you would think that would be a pretty simple task, but not when girls are involved. I was also in charge of having to raise money as soon as possible because we were short and that was not easy, but we did finally pull through. The matrics also had to admit that we created a spectacular and special evening.

Apart from the matric dance I really was looking forward to going on exchange to Westover School in Connecticut, America. Having never stepped outside the South African border, except for having gone to Namibia to the Orange River for a two-week field trip in my grade ten year. Going to America was truly going to be fabulous. I mean which teenager has ever not wanted to go the United Sates of America? It gets better, I get to go basically by myself. I couldn’t wait for that day and especially that I had never been on a plane.

Besides being so busy with all these things you cannot forget school. School has been a lot of fun this term, going on Business Economics trip for three days, learning about the production and marketing process of manufactured goods was very interesting and worthwhile. We learnt about the advertising industry to apple and raspeberry farming and even the making of bras and production of timber. There’s a lot more to school than just academics who can forget sports.

This term my major sport was soccer and the only sport I played because I had too many other commitments such as the school choir, chamber choir, a member of the junior city council, round square committee and being the executive as well I had to try and keep up. I just got into the chamber choir this term because at first I had always been nervous about it since the chamber choir consisted of only the best voices in the school choir and I had to be able to read music. Actually I cannot red music properly but I still got in and that was an achievement which I am proud of. I was selected to be a delegate and represent the St Cyprians school at an international round square conference which takes place in September.

Having all these experiences and opportunities happening to me at the same time made the term go much quicker and this is always a good thing. School has been truly fun and I don’t know but these remarkable things have contributed to my final decision on what course I should do when I am at university. I have decided that I want to do political science, may I would work for the UN and make a difference or even become an ambassador for the country I truly love. The other course might be a bachelor in science of criminal justice. It is quite a contrast, but it all has to do with law so you see where I am heading.
